After planning and preparing her bookmarks, Michelle is ready to Pre-Teach the target words to the children. Watch as she uses the best picture in the book to define the words for the first time and prompts the children to repeat the target words in the text.
Teacher: Can you say “aquarium?”
Students: Aquarium.
Teacher: An “aquarium” is a glass container that holds plants and animals.
(Voiceover): Michelle uses the child-friendly definitions to explain the target words and prompts the children to repeat the words again. Notice how some of the pictures she defines do not have corresponding text on that page. The main focus during Pre-Teach is to share the most realistic and true-to-life picture of the target word.
Teacher: Say “sleeping bag.”
Students: Sleeping bag.
Teacher: Very good. Look, they’re all in a “sleeping bag.”
Teacher: And we’re going to read this book a little bit later after we go outside.
Student: Woo!
Teacher: Would you like to go outside now?
Students: Yes.
Teacher: Okay.
